How Rare is Mercury Retrograde?

Mercury goes retrograde more often than any other planet due to its proximity to the Sun and appears to change direction when it reaches its farthest point from the Sun.

Mercury goes retrograde for 3 or 4 times in a year, for approximately 3 weeks at a time before it turns direct again. This means Mercury is retrograde is a total of up to to 12 weeks a year. Approximately 20% of people have Mercury retrograde in their natal chart.

Ancient astrologers recognized this cyclic pattern and correlated certain attributes with this motion. These attributes are still used in astrology today.

When someone has Mercury retrograde in the natal chart, their thinking tends to be turned inward. Their mind may process information differently and tend to communicate in ways not typical to their Mercury sign (or house). Individuals with this placement tend to think carefully before they speak, revisit ideas, and approach learning in unique or unconventional ways.
