Planets can sometimes appear to move backward in the sky and in astrology, this motion is known as retrograde. This backward movement is an illusion caused by Earth’s position, its own orbit, and the orbits of the planets as seen from Earth’s perspective. Retrograde motion subtly affects how the planets are expressed in astrology. This article lists the different personality traits associated with Mercury retrograde in each Zodiac sign.

How Rare is Mercury Retrograde?

Mercury goes retrograde more often than any other planet due to its proximity to the Sun and appears to change direction when it reaches its farthest point from the Sun.

Mercury goes retrograde for 3 or 4 times in a year, for approximately 3 weeks at a time before it turns direct again. This means Mercury is retrograde is a total of up to to 12 weeks a year. Approximately 20% of people have Mercury retrograde in their natal chart.

Ancient astrologers recognized this cyclic pattern and correlated certain attributes with this motion. These attributes are still used in astrology today.

Mercury Retrograde General Traits

When someone has Mercury retrograde in the natal chart, their thinking tends to be turned inward. Their mind may process information differently and tend to communicate in ways not typical to their Mercury sign (or house). Individuals with this placement tend to think carefully before they speak, revisit ideas, and approach learning in unique or unconventional ways. Even if their emotions are felt strongly internally, they prefer to express them in private, or more cautiously, especially early in life. Mercury retrograde can present as introspection, a tendency towards revision/changing their mind, and a heightened awareness, which influences how a person understands and expresses their ideas.

Mercury Retrograde In Each Sign

Mercury Retrograde in Aries

These individuals think in a clear, straightforward manner, but they process many ideas, thoughts, and critiques internally before expressing them. Unlike those with a direct Mercury in Aries, they may take time to reflect on complex issues rather than reaching immediate conclusions. Although they are usually decisive, decision-making often takes more time as they weigh options. They have great observation skills and are quick to notice details, but are less impulsive in verbalizing them. With a slower, more deliberate way of thinking, their speech pattern is slower too and are less likely to be fast-talkers. They approach intellectual challenges with curiosity and enthusiasm, but may be prone to overthinking or prefer to focus their curiosity on psychology and philosophy, and understanding their inner world. They’re not easily swayed by other people’s opinions or criticism when forming their own judgments. However, they are susceptible to overworking themselves at times and pushing their capacity to its limits.

Mercury Retrograde in Taurus

Careful and deliberate when making decisions, those with Taurus Mercury Retrograde are also cautious about expressing their opinions. They much prefer to think things through well before speaking. But unlike direct Mercury in Taurus, they may have more difficulty communicating effectively. They are curious about both tangible topics and abstract ideas, especially subjects that touch on identity and human emotion. When something captures their attention, they demonstrate an exceptional ability to think deeply and concentrate their energy thoughtfully on the task, but they may find it difficult to maintain their attention for other tasks. As with Mercury in Taurus, they tend to resist having others’ opinions forced upon them, and prefer to form their conclusions at their own pace. Practicality still plays a role, but self-reflection and internal processing guide’s their thinking. They value real, measurable results, and once they’ve acquired what they need for true security, such as a stable home, a satisfying love life, or a reliable job, they tend to get quite attached and resist change until new information causes them to reconsider.

Mercury Retrograde in Gemini

Typically witty and clever, these individuals have very curious minds. They’re inventive and have versatile thinking abilities, though they may struggle to express themselves clearly at first or to follow through on tasks consistently. They have a great need to be intellectually stimulated, and they often feel happiest when engaged in compelling conversation. However, they can flip-flop on their decisions frequently, which can make them seem hesitant or sometimes work against themselves in other ways. Although intelligent, Mercury in retrograde in Gemini may cause some setbacks with their education or ability to learn, or difficulties with memory. Communication-wise, they can either be chatty or quiet, but they’re often charismatic and can be very convincing once they feel confident in their opinions and words. This talent, especially when combined with an interest in human psychology, tends to serve them well professionally. The downsides of this placement can manifest in taking longer to respond to messages, and they may struggle with a short attention span. This placement can also cause problems with consistency and honesty under certain situations, but their reflective approach often helps them correct course. Occasionally Gemini mercury retrograde can result in difficulty with how their communication is received by others, but this can be  overcome with more experience.

Mercury Retrograde in Cancer

These individuals tend not to be very talkative, especially when first meeting people, they prefer to listen and observe before speaking. They can sometimes be defensive while remaining receptive and understanding towards others. Even though their intuition tends to be strong, their thought patterns can be unconventional while being influenced by their emotions, which can sometimes negatively impact decision-making. Unfortunately, these people may tend to overthink, dwell on the past, or engage in negative self-talk at times. Many have a good work ethic, which serves them well in life, but miscommunication can be a recurring problem for some. While they don’t mind change, they tend to approach it with hesitation. They gravitate toward established, familiar concepts and tend to be skeptical of radical ideas. They prefer taking calculated risks and this quality is further emphasized with Mercury in retrograde. Their artistic interests run deepas their creative imagination often draws directly from their emotional state. This connection between mood and creativity means their artistic expression is quite captivating

Mercury Retrograde in Leo

Those with a Leo Mercury retrograde are usually confident in their thoughts but rarely express themselves in an impulsive way. Their need for self-expression is strong, but they may hesitate to share opinions until they have fully thought things through. Like those with direct Mercury in Leo, honesty and problem-solving remain a strength, but with the added benefit of reiterating or revisiting solutions. However, this trait can also result in delays or procrastination, especially when there’s excessive other-thinking. Although intelligent, having Mercury in retrograde in Leo may cause some setbacks with their education or may result in different learning needs.  They’re not easily swayed by others and can struggle to see situations from different perspectives, which can limit their understanding of opposing viewpoints. Although generally persuasive in nature, their words aren’t always received as intended.

Mercury Retrograde in Virgo

Generally practical, sincere, and thoughtful, these individuals are always careful not to misrepresent themselves. They prefer working carefully and efficiently, constantly refining their methods in work and in other aspects of their life. They tend to have a narrow outlook and can be skeptical of new ideas and people, but their minds can be changed once they’ve made a thorough assessment. Their humility is apparent in how they conduct themselves, treating others in a respectful manner and choosing their words thoughtfully. They can be critical at times, but this is often directed inward, reflecting their tendency to analyze and reassess themselves and their ideas. This self-criticism often stems from their high standards and desire for accuracy in everything they do. Some with mercury retrograde in Virgo can take too long a time to get things done (due to their perfectionist tendencies), which can lead to setbacks.

Mercury Retrograde in Libra

These individuals are usually tactful when communicating, don’t typically exaggerate, and tend to be non-confrontational, but sometimes they can get it wrong, which can cause much distress. Quite adaptable, they are capable of thinking strategically and creatively, though their indecisiveness can set them back at times.  It’s not usual for them to revisit options and change their minds after carefully weighing pros and cons, only for them to reconsider all over again! Their sense of fairness and intuition guide their thoughts, and they approach decisions thoughtfully, taking time to consider others’ viewpoints before expressing their own which helps them avoid coming to conclusions too rashly. With Mercury retrograde in Venus-ruled Libra, these individuals have a natural aptitude and apreciation for form, art, and beauty.

Mercury Retrograde in Scorpio

Those with a Scorpio Mercury retrograde are generally introspective and reflective in nature. They’re naturally quiet, not particularly talkative, and have a tendency to get lost in their own thoughts. Their practicality also makes them cautious and deliberate with their words and actions. Their straightforward nature remains but it is often restrained in some way. So they may hesitate to speak until necessary. It can be difficult for some to find a balance between over-communication and under-communication, or in the manner in which they express themselves. Like those with a direct Mercury in Scorpio, passions run deep, and they can become obsessed with their work, hobbies, or intellectual interests. They are often drawn to psychology, understanding others, and exploring human nature through sociology or occult topics, with a desire to uncover hidden truths.

Mercury Retrograde in Sagittarius

Curious with a capacity for deep thought, these people are intelligent individuals who love to learn. Their restless minds are typically full of thoughts spanning many interests. They are drawn to broad concepts, philosophy, spirituality, and understanding the universe, and like to reflect on core principles and inner meaning. However, their thinking is slower and more deliberate compared to those with a direct Mercury in Sagittarius, and they usually need longer to fully grasp and integrate ideas as a result (in some cases, this could manifest as setbacks in education). Communication can be more cautious, too. The plus side is that they are less likely to speak without thinking, but to their frustration, they may still occasionally say the wrong thing. In general, they value independent thought, open-mindedness, and exploration of many concepts and ideas.

Mercury Retrograde in Capricorn

These individuals are practical, logical thinkers who approach decisions with careful consideration. With their self-driven attitude, they usually have a strong drive to achieve something meaningful and they often have multiple projects or goals they are working towards. Although they are thorough and careful in their work and decision-making, they may struggle either with concentration or with their mood getting in the way. Progress tends to come in small steps, as they tend to reassess and refine their approach. Similar to direct Mercury in Capricorn, they prefer to earn their achievements through consistent effort, building their reputation and accomplishments over time. They feel uncomfortable leaving things to luck or heavily relying on their connections, and may avoid networking. Communication-wise, they tend to be reserved, and they may struggle to communicate their emotions to others, choosing instead to redirect their emotional energy towards productive activities.

Mercury Retrograde in Aquarius

Those with an Aquarius Mercury retrograde are often creative, progressive thinkers, and their ideas often go against traditional ways of doing things. Their creativity is often expressed through an emotional lens and mental experimentation. They may be interested in innovation, technology, or social reform. They’re particularly skilled at consulting and science-related work, as they’re able to maintain a detached view that allows them to see situations objectively, making them a good judge of many things, but they may take longer to fully form conclusions. Their communication is generally thoughtful and not overtly direct, but sometimes their way of communicating isn’t well-received. Strong ideals shape their thinking, but these ideals are often questioned and refined over time as they tend to be quite introspective. Sometimes they can be a little too idealistic in their worldview and may feel let down when the world falls short of their vision. Nevertheless, their strong intuition guides their decision-making, and over time, this reflective process sets them up with good interpersonal skills.

Mercury Retrograde in Pisces

Imaginative, creative, and adaptable, these individuals are very receptive, and their thoughts are likely influenced by the people around them. It’s not unusual for them to absorb subtle cues, especially emotions, from their environment. They’re typically good listeners with great empathy and can easily put themselves in others’ shoes. They dislike hurting people, so they tend to think things through, be careful with words, and hesitate to speak unless they feel emotionally aligned with what they want to say. Their communication style tends to be indirect, which can cause communication mishaps. When making decisions, they rely more on inner feeling than logic, even if the outcome seems impractical, and their thoughts can shift with mood, leading them to second-guess themselves most of the time. They may retreat into imagination or inner worlds as a way of processing experiences, which can slow their focus at times. They’re likely drawn to philosophical ideas about understanding the universe and the human experience. Their minds gravitate toward music and different forms of art, since they often inspire their imagination. Daydreaming, reliving memories, and intuition strongly influence how they think and communicate.
